I wanted to shoot this quick video to make sure that you're maximizing your Google My Business opportunity.
First, we're going to take a look at a typical Google search to see where these GMB's are showing up.
Then, we'll see how these search results can change, depending on where you are around the town and in different locations.
Then, we'll see how the top competition is showing up around Springfield.
To get started, I've gone to Google and done "Concrete Services Near Springfield Illinois." If you do see any ads, they're going to be above the map in this location. These ads tend to gets 5 to 15% of the traffic coming to this page. This next section is called the map pack, this gets 60 to 70% of that traffic and these organic search results.
What most people think of as a Google search get about 20 to 30%, depending on how everything breaks down. It's essentially whatever's left. And when I'm talking about web traffic, you can think of it just like foot traffic. It kind of boils down to getting your phone number in front of the people who are looking for concrete services.
So that they can pick up the phone and call. And with that in mind, we can kind of take a look at why this map pack is so effective getting 70% of those people who are looking for concrete contractors. It's because Google's really making it easy to pick up that phone and call.
The phone number is upfront for everyone who's scrolling past to see. And if you're on a mobile phone often, there's this number is a button where you can link up your cell phone directly and call at that moment. These guys tend to collect the most attention from people looking for concrete services.
These are the top GMB's number 1, 2, and 3 of these Google My Business Listings. If you want to find number four, you have to click this "View all" and expand and there's number four right there and so on. As you continue going down on this list, eventually, you'll hit a second level where you get to page 2 and 3, 4, 5, 6.
I guess it stops at five in Springfield. The higher up you are on this list, the better you do. But because of something called being above the fold, these top three get the majority of these phone calls. And this concept of being above the fold refers to this "View All" button that we were looking at.
And, it kind of comes from an idea of when you were reading a lot of envelopes letters every single day. The information that's above the fold gets read by everyone because they have to decide whether or not it's an important letter that deserves their full attention or not.
The idea of being above the fold means that everyone who's looking at that letter is going to read it in order to understand what is the contents are. And if you don't find what you need, you're going to open up that letter, unfold it, and see the full text. In this case, the full text is this full list of GMB's and the fold is that button.
We want to be ideally above the fold because that means Google's pushing our phone number out in front of everyone who's scrolling past and it's not hidden behind this button. That requires people to choose to see your phone number and a lot of people just grab the easy number and move on with their day.
That's a typical Google search. Next, I want to show you a tool called a Heat Map. This takes that same search data that we were just looking at a list of GMB's or you can think of it as a list of phone numbers and it lays it out over a specific location. Here, we've got Springfield, and to explain this Heat Map, I'm going to zoom in.
You can see this is a particular location around Springfield. We've got Walmart here looks like the playgrounds. And the way to understand the Heat Map is to think imagine that there's a person in this location. Potentially, at Walmart, maybe picking something up and you're doing this person.
We'll call him, Joe is doing a Google search for concrete services. So that he can get some research done for when he goes back home to actually call. These guys and Google is going to give Joe at Walmart a list of phone numbers based on that Google search "Concrete Services Near Me." Just like we were taking a look at.
And on that list, this particular contractor Slab Jackers Construction is number three on Joe's list. On the other hand, maybe Joe lives a couple miles North right on 124. Oh there, we go another location Belle Terra and goes back home and does a Google search the same word-for-word Google search.
And what this Heat Map is saying is that because of the different location. Google is going to give a different list of Google My Businesses. And on that list, Slab Jackers Construction is number 10. You can see that there's a big change, especially, given that idea of being above the fold versus below the fold.
Slab Jackers Construction has a very good chance of getting that phone call when Joe is at Walmart. But when he's at Belle Terra Farms, that chance of getting that phone call really drops off. He's probably going to call whoever's number 1, 2, or 3 in this location and not call Slab Jackers.
A lot of people don't realize that this Google My Business list can change within only a couple miles. This is an awesome tool to get a bird's eye view of how you're doing in this area. Next, I want to take a look specifically at your business and how you're doing. Hey, Robinson Excavating Concrete!
This is your GMB Heat Map for the Springfield Illinois area. To jump into this analysis, I want to start with where you're really knocking it out of the park and that's the patches of green we're looking at. These are a lot of 2's, and 3's. And even though you don't have that number 1 spot, it's more important to think about this in levels.
So, this green 1 through 3 would be that top-level and you're essentially on that level playing field with your phone number out and you can compete against those other number 1, and number 3, number 1, and number 2. Those other GMBs' and you've got a really good shot at getting that phone call.
A lot of people want to call the top three. So, they can get comparisons. Anyway, so you've got that opportunity to then close the job with a potential client or send out bids. The more calls that you get in, the more bids you can send out. And the more jobs you close, ultimately growing your business, and providing that opportunity to support your family, support your employees, and have an impact.
So that's what we start with is this top layer. The next layer down would be 4 through about 9. These are the below the fold GMB's as I kind of sketched out on the normal Google search and these. Though they don't get the top slice of phone calls, they are the next best. So, it's does generate some calls from those people who are looking for that number 4, number 5 who really want as much data as possible.
They can make a good decision and get a concrete contractor that's a good fit. The third layer would be these dark red double-digits and these indicate that you're kind of stuck on that second page and your phone number is buried even further. Then, they're sort of below the fold, and then there's below the fold and that's what where we're at.
Here, these aren't really getting any phone calls to speak of just because they're stuck so far down. You have to have 14 other companies fail this potential client, potential customer before you even get that shot. So that's an overview of where you're at currently. Next, I'd like to take a look at a different Heat Map.
This is a competitor that shows you where we can kind of take this. Here, we've got a lot more of this green going on easily double. What your patch of green was? So, if you can kind of imagine how strong you were in this particular location here on Google, imagine doubling that or tripling that.
This guy is going from even the weak spots 4's and 5's are really close. If we were to get in here and kind of push these up the ranks, we could easily get a completely green grid, which just translates to that's what we mean when we want to maximize that opportunity of getting your bids out there.

But that's the broad brushstrokes of how we can kind of change these number 4's into number 3's, and change the double digits into single digits, and really dominate the space, and make sure that we're maximizing the opportunity that's available. We want that phone number out in front of as many people as possible.
